How to silence your inner editor when drafting

Posted onMay 30, 2022October 3, 2022

We all have an inner editor – that little voice that criticises everything we write when we’re trying to put words down on the page. Telling us that’s not a good enough word or this whole chapter is garbage or I’m not writing this character…

How to overcome writer’s burnout

Posted onNovember 15, 2021October 3, 2022

Writer’s burnout can happen for lots of reasons – stress, overworking yourself, putting pressure on yourself and your work, forcing the work in spite of difficult circumstances. It’s fairly common, especially among writers who also have a full-time job and/or other responsibilities. Luckily, there are…

Writing when you have a full-time job

Posted onAugust 27, 2021October 3, 2022

Writing when you have a full-time job isn’t easy. I recently spotted a tweet expressing worry about how anyone can have time to write when they have to work full-time hours. I thought it’d be a good topic for a blog post, because it’s something…

Coping with the pain of rejection as a writer

Posted onJuly 25, 2021October 3, 2022

Rejection is unfortunately a big part of being a writer, and so is coping with that. What makes it even harder is that we tend to be sensitive people. We’re emotionally attached to our work, pouring months or even years into it. When you spend…

Are you ready to have your writing critiqued?

Posted onFebruary 21, 2020October 3, 2022

I’ve talked before about dealing with feedback on your writing. I wanted to pedal back and talk about something a bit similar today: how to know if you’re ready to have your writing critiqued. It can be a big step if you’re new and haven’t…

Dealing with feedback on your writing

Posted onJuly 30, 2019October 3, 2022

Dealing with writing feedback is something we all struggle with. It can be hard and upsetting to receive a critique that points out the problems with your work, no matter how nicely worded that critique is, because you’ve more than likely poured a lot of…

Happy Sunday πŸ’– I'm having a very peaceful one. Happy Sunday πŸ’– I'm having a very peaceful one. After working hard on editing projects for clients throughout March, I'm exhausted, but I have a little over a week off to recharge. I'm looking forward to watching some Kdramas and reading some books for enjoyment, including this one! Does anyone else *love* Studio Ghibli?

I've also been working on a big overhaul of my website (another reason why I'm so tired!), and I'm planning to launch it next week sometime. πŸ‘€

A little spot of Sunday afternoon writing. I fille A little spot of Sunday afternoon writing. I filled out my cover designer's questionnaire for my next self-published fairytale yesterday, and I'm so excited to eventually share that! Now I'm working on a contemporary romance for my agent to eventually submit to publishing houses. I'm really loving this one. I'm keeping the idea close to my chest but the concept means a lot to me, the words are flowing and I'm enjoying every minute of writing it. πŸ€—

Right now I'm rereading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gil Right now I'm rereading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. Last time I read this book, it was around 2016. It was before I signed with an agent, before I self-published some of my work, before I started going on sub to publishers. I wasn't even working as an editor back then!

My writing life has changed a lot, so I thought it'd be interesting to revisit it. My author self today is not only involved with self-publishing fantasy books, but I've also started writing a contemporary romance to have another go at getting a book deal. It's been so refreshing and fun. So much advice out there says you must focus on one thing, one genre, brand yourself properly. But that's so limiting and as people we're multifaceted. Elizabeth Gilbert's thoughts on writing are amazing because she reminds us that we're artists, creatives, at heart. We have to cut through all the noise sometimes to remember that.

Here's the blurb.

--

Hugo Strand dreams of seeing the world, becoming a travel writer, and making something of himself. But with little money, a fragile mother to care for, and the memories of his drowned father to haunt him, he fears he’ll be stuck on Shale Island forever – a place where storms and churning seas fuel whispers of the sea gods, said to awaken every thousand years.

When a sea monster attacks and destroys the sea-train, cutting Shale off from the mainland, what was once myth becomes reality. Teaming up with archaeologist Alma Merneith, Hugo sets out to investigate a strange affliction driving the islanders to madness and death.

But their search uncovers a force beyond imagining, and proof that the sea gods are more monstrous than the residents of Shale could have dreamed. Hugo must battle his lifelong fear of the sea, and Alma must put her archaeological knowledge to the test, to overcome a monstrous legend wearing a crown made of bones...
