Are you ready to start submitting to literary agents? I offer submission packages to help with that, from query letter editing to opening chapter feedback. I’ve been through the slush pile myself – I’m signed with a literary agent for my own writing – so I know what a struggle it is to get your work noticed when the odds seem impossible. Let’s improve your chances and get your query letter, synopsis and opening chapters into good shape!
Query letter editing
I’ll provide extensive feedback on your query letter using the commenting tool, and edit it with Tracked Changes to remove redundancies, fix typos and grammar mistakes, and so on. I’ll also include an example of what your revised query letter might look like with changes implemented, to give you a point of reference for reworking your letter yourself. I’ll give brief feedback (one paragraph) on a revised query letter after you’ve made your own changes. You should send your new query letter to me within two weeks for additional feedback.
Query letter and synopsis submission package
You’ll get everything included in the query-only service above, plus a few pages of feedback notes on your synopsis, covering strengths and weaknesses, suggested improvements, and what literary agents will be expecting from a synopsis that lands in their inbox. Note that this doesn’t include direct edits to the synopsis. The idea is to provide feedback to help you recraft your own. Throughout your writing career you’ll have to write a synopsis yourself, so it’s a good skill to learn to hone.
Opening chapters only (up to 10k words)
I’ll provide about 4–5 pages of feedback notes on your opening chapters (up to 10k words). This will include general comments, feedback on your presentation and formatting (including how you can make this in line with submission standards), your target audience, and strengths and weaknesses in terms of the writing, world, characters and story. This service includes one email consultation for questions.
Full submission package
The full submission package includes all three of the services described above. You’ll get the query letter edit, synopsis notes, and feedback on your opening chapters. This service includes one email consultation for questions.
Pricing
Prices vary depending on length and complexity, the amount of editorial intervention required, and any additional requests or requirements associated with your submission package. My pricing is guided by the CIEP’s suggested minimum rates and the Editorial Freelancers Association’s rate chart. If we decide to work together, I require a 25% booking deposit that is non-refundable. Some smaller services are payable upfront.
